Nanotechnology will be the subject of a new cooperative research effort between NASA and the National Institute of Cancer. The two organizations signed a memorandum of understanding in Washington, D.C., today to help each other develop tiny machines for detecting and curing illness.

NASA's interest is in developing microscopic medical devices to help keep astronauts healthy on multi-year space missions. “This is going to be the key to being able to send people responsibly away for 2-4 years,” said NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin. “What we are concerned about is that we just can't take enough equipment on a space vehicle to Mars, so we want to deal with medicine at the subcell and cellular level.” First-year funding for the program will be in the tens of thousands of dollars, primarily to fund grants to researchers.
